Child Protection Program

Medical Consultation Services

The Child Protection Program provides tertiary consultation services for patients admitted to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for alleged physical and/or sexual abuse and neglect.

In addition, the Child Protection Program provides consultation services to out-patients from various medical clinics at the University of Iowa as well. These consultations are provided by Resmiye Oral, MD, with the support of the designated area social worker, and Scott Fedler.

After a thorough interview of the caretakers or custodians of the child, the physician and the social worker interview the child, if the child is verbal. The physician performs a comprehensive physical examination. The physician reviews imaging studies with a pediatric radiologist. Based on all interview data, interactions with the caretakers, information obtained from other professionals involved in the care of the child, physical examination findings, and laboratory results, the Child Protection Program physician and the social worker determine the necessity of filing a report with DHS.

The Child Protection Program physician generates a comprehensive report of the consultation and provides this to the referring physician along with the social worker's social assessment report. This document becomes part of the child's medical record and is also faxed to the related Department of Human Services with the B-22a Child Abuse and Neglect reporting form of the UI Hospitals and Clinics.
