The Child Protection Program has initiated research projects involving the spectrum of injury after accidental and non-accidental falls, confirmed cases of shaken impact syndrome, and in-utero drug exposure. The program has implemented a Shaken Baby Prevention program at the Newborn Nursery, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and Pediatrics and Family Practice Clinics. This program has recently been extended to include “train the trainers” efforts within the Department of Education and its statewide network. A team of staff from UI Children's Hospital is working with the Prevent Child Abuse Iowa, department of Public Health and Department of Education to obtain private/state funding to expand Shaken Baby Prevention to include all birthing hospitals and community based agencies in Iowa.
UI Children's Hospital Child Protection Program also led statewide efforts to develop a statewide policy on Perinatal Illicit Drug Use Screening and Intervention, which was approved by the Perinatal Care Program, a program of Department of Public Health. Currently, Perinatal Care Program staff is disseminating this policy and providing training to local birthing hospitals’ staff on utilizing this new policy.
