First Time? Advice from Other Kids
CT Scan (Computed Tomography)

CT Scan (Computed Tomography), by Teresa, Age 17

After checking in at the desk, wait for your name to be called. The nurse will take you to a changing room to put on a hospital gown, and you'll be asked to drink 2 glasses of funny-tasting fluid (contrast material so they can see better), and you may need to get an IV (see kids advice about IV). You will then drink 1 more glass of fluid and go into the CT room where you will lie on the table/bed. Sometimes it is cold in the room, so ask for a blanket.

Your IV will get hooked up to contrast solution which may give you a feeling of copper in your mouth or make you warm. The machine will start, and you need to lie very still. You will be given breathing instructions and should stay calm as the bed slowly moves through the CT tube. The nurse will unhook your IV, and you're finished. You can change out of the hospital gown and leave.
