Savannah Erck’s spine was crushing her brain stem, a condition that would cause agony and death if not corrected. Her doctor in New York felt the only surgeon who could help her was nearly 1,000 miles away, at UI Children’s Hospital. Savannah’s family brought her to Iowa for the 12-hour procedure, and returned eight months later for follow-up surgery to correct the curvature of her spine.
