Faculty and Staff
More than 200 physicians and surgeons with special expertise and certification in the care of children provide the medical and surgical care. These specialists include board-certified physicians in pediatrics and many specialties including otolaryngology - head and neck surgery, orthopaedics, ophthalmology, and neonatology, to name a few.
In addition to providing patient care, UI Children's Hospital faculty and staff members educate and train the next generation of health care professionals dedicated to caring for children and conducting research into some of childhood's most challenging diseases and disorders.
Nursing - Children's and Women's Division
More than 400 specially-trained pediatric nurses provide care to children at UI Children's Hospital. These nurses strive to build on our traditional missions of patient care, education and research; create innovation in nursing and in the delivery of health care; adapt our organization to succeed in a changing environment; and work collaboratively as partners with our professional colleagues, and individuals, communities and organizations we serve.
Child Life Specialists
Child Life specialists provide a variety of activities to promote normal child development as well as care for the emotional needs of children and their families. Special care is given to help children understand and cope with illness and the hospital.
Dietitians
Dietitians help insure each patient receives a diet that will support growth and healing.
Pharmacists
Pharmacists dispense medications and work closely with doctors and nurses to evaluate how well it works.
Music Therapists
The music therapy program provides services to children throughout UI Children's Hospital.
Physical Therapists
Physical therapists assist in the assessment of muscle strength and may suggest exercises to improve mobility.
Respiratory Therapists
Respiratory therapists provide oxygen therapy, give breathing treatments, perform chest physiotherapy and monitor ventilator functions.
Social Workers
Social workers provide counseling and family support, as well as information about insurance coverage and financial options.
Certified Teachers
A certified teacher collaborates with the local teacher(s) or counselor to continue school assignments. The teacher generally requests a 504 Plan or IEP to insure students' legal rights. When a child is discharged, she recommends homebound tutoring if medically necessary, and suggests classroom accommodations specific to the patient's diagnosis.
