Symptoms of heart failure, a chronic disease affecting nearly five million Americans, include shortness of breath when active, swelling of lower extremities, and fatigue.
After being evaluated and diagnosed with heart failure, your treatment options at the UI Cardiomyopathy program include:
- Standard treatments including diuretics and medication
- Advanced treatments such as ultrafiltration or intravenous infusions
- Surgical options including ventricular assist devices and pacemakers
- Heart transplants at Iowa's only heart transplant program
The UI Cardiomyopathy program also offers treatment for pulmonary hypertension and care for congenital heart patients who are now adults.
