Outreach Services
The expertise of UI Heart and Vascular Center benefits hundreds of patients who come
to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics each year. But it also
reaches beyond Iowa City, bringing expert heart care directly to the
patients who receive treatment at outreach clinics in several
communities throughout Iowa.
Last year alone, more than 1,300 people received health care at
outreach clinics. One of them was Edgar Nguyen of Davenport, who is
now a healthy one-year-old.
Edgar was only one month old when his pediatrician discovered
serious congenital heart problems and referred him to University of Iowa Children's Hospital, part of University of Iowa Health Care.
After delicate surgery to correct transposed arteries and a small
hole in his heart, Edgar went home within days. Today, he's doing
extremely well. And best of all, he can receive follow-up heart care
close to home, thanks to University of Iowa Children's Hospital's pediatric
cardiology outreach clinic in Davenport, which opened in July 1998.
Nearly 20 UI Heart and Vascular Center physicians participate in outreach
programs, which provide on-site clinical services to people in the
communities of Ames, Burlington, Clinton, Davenport, Des Moines,
Dubuque, Fort Dodge, Keokuk, Keosauqua, Mason City, Muscatine,
Ottumwa, Sioux City, Spencer, Waterloo and Galesburg, Illinois.
Typically, a physician, nurse and physician assistant team spends one
day a week in the clinic, making it more convenient for people to
receive specialty care. These outreach services are consistent with
University of Iowa's historic commitment to serve the health care
needs of all Iowans. For example, pediatric cardiology has been
delivering outreach services through the Child Health Specialty
Clinics for over 40 years.
