When Chest Pain Strikes,
Think 24•7•5

If you experience chest pains, call 911 immediately.

Specialists in the UI Chest Pain Center are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, within 5 minutes.

The UI Chest Pain Center is located in the Emergency Treatment Center and serves as the command post for cardiac risk assessment. The Chest Pain Center enhances the evaluation and management of chest pain for patients coming to the Emergency Treatment Center, Eastern Iowa's only designated Level I Trauma Center.

During an observation period of eight to 12 hours, Chest Pain Center physicians conduct a standard set of tests to help them determine which patients can safely go home and which patients require hospital admission and further cardiac testing.

Prior to discharge, most patients undergo a form of provocative testing (for example, treadmill testing) to further assess their cardiac risk.

No appointment is required and the Center offers:

  • Immediate treatment
  • Healthy heart education
  • Cardiac rehab counseling
  • Stress testing by UI Heart and Vascular Center experts
