The Heart Transplant Program has been in existence since June of 1985 when the first adult patient received a heart transplant at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. This was followed by the first pediatric heart transplant in November of 1987.

The program takes multidisciplinary approach to caring for transplant patients and staffs each patient with a primary heart failure/transplant cardiologist and nurse coordinator.

As of June 1, 2006, 224 patients received heart transplants at UI Hospitals and Clinics, 173 adults and 51 pediatric patients.
