Symptom Management
It is our goal to help you feel better. There are some things that can be done at home to keep heart failure more controlled.
Get to Know Your Symptoms
Think about the symptoms you had before you were treated for heart failure. If these symptoms start again or worsen, let us know.
Daily Weights
It is very important to have a reliable scale and weigh yourself every day. Gaining weight is often the first sign that your condition is worsening. Weigh yourself every morning, after you empty your bladder, and before you eat. Record your weight in your diary.
How to Know if You Have Extra Fluid
- Weight gain
- Hands, feet or leg swelling--rings, watch or shoes may feel tight
- Abdominal bloating--clothing may feel tight around your stomach
- Shortness of breath
- Difficulty breathing laying down or needing more pillows
Diary
- If you have not already been given a diary, you will be given one soon
- This is a good place to write down your weights, blood pressures, and how you are feeling
- We would like you to bring this to your clinic visits
- If you want to write down good days and bad days and what makes them good or bad, this will help us decide what treatment is best for you
Blood Work
You may need to have blood work drawn occasionally. If you have not heard from your nurse by the next day after you had your blood drawn, call your nurse to check on the results. Do not assume your labs are ok.
