UI Heart and Vascular Center: Cardiomyopathy Treatment Program

Outpatient Infusion Unit
Intermittent Intravenous Therapy

Advanced heart failure patients may at times require extra medical intervention. The University of Iowa's Cardiomyopathy Treatment Program has an infusion therapy suite for this purpose. The infusion room is located within the Medical Cardiology Unit on 4 John Colloton Pavilion (4JCW). As indicated, patients come on an outpatient basis for intravenous (IV) infusion of medications to treat their heart failure. These medications may include diuretics to help the body eliminate extra fluids or others as prescribed by your heart failure specialist.

A typical day in the infusion room begins with arrival in the morning. An IV is then placed and laboratory tests drawn as ordered by your physician. The medications are then started and may run for 6 hours or longer. Patient's vital signs and heart rhythm are monitored during the infusions to maintain safety. At the end of the therapy patients are then discharged home.

The infusion therapy suites at the UI Hospitals and Clinics act as a bridge, preventing costly admissions and providing advanced care on an outpatient basis. If you or someone you care for may benefit from this service, please call the UI Cardiomyopathy Treatment Program at 319-356-1028.
