Vascular Risk Screening
10 million Americans are at risk for PAD. Are you one of them?
Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) is a serious vascular disease that can lead to stroke, heart attack, or sudden death. Millions of Americans are at risk and most don’t even know it. There are no warning signs for PAD, but we can detect it with a quick, painless vascular screening at UI Heart and Vascular Center.
Vascular Screening Program
UI Heart and Vascular Center offers three simple, non-invasive tests to detect PAD.
- Carotid Artery Ultrasound
- This ultrasound looks for blockages or narrowing of the arteries in the neck. This detects plaque that can lead to a stroke.
- Abdominal Aortic Ultrasound
- An ultrasound of the abdomen looks for weaknesses or enlargement of the abdominal aorta; this is called an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). The majority of people with AAA have no symptoms. If a rupture occurs, the mortality rate is as high as 80 percent.
- Ankle-Brachial Index
- This screening uses cuffs to measure the blood pressure on your arms and ankles and can detect narrowing or blockages of your leg arteries. It checks for PAD of the legs.
Who should be screened?
Men and women ages 50 and older with the following risk factors:
- Diabetes
- High cholesterol
- High blood pressure
- Smoker
- Obesity
- Family history of stroke, AAA, or heart or vascular disease
