  • University of Iowa Children’s Hospital is home to some of the world’s most skilled blood and marrow, heart, kidney, lung, and liver specialists for children and adolescents.
  • Specialists in the Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplant Program performed 15 bone marrow transplants last year and have completed more than 425 since May 1986. These include autologous and allergenic marrow, peripheral blood stem cell, and umbilical cord blood transplants.
  • The Pediatric Heart Transplantation Program performs transplants on patients from birth to adult years. It has performed transplants on 54 children. Pediatric Heart Transplantation also performs surgery on adults with congenital heart defects and implants ventricular assist devices.
  • Pediatric kidney transplants have been performed for a number of years. Under the new University of Iowa Transplant Program, it expects to perform about five transplants a year using a steroid-sparing protocol.
  • The lung transplant program can perform transplantation on patients of all ages.
  • Liver transplants are performed at UI Children’s Hospital by surgeons experienced with this procedure.
