UI Hospitals and Clinics surgeons performed Iowa’s first adult heart transplant in June 1985.
Since the program’s inception, more than 240 patients—including 54 children—have received heart transplants.
The program has excellent patient survival rates. Since 2004, adult survival is 100 percent after one year and 95 percent after three years.
Part of the Cardiomyopathy Treatment Program, the Heart Transplant Service provides multidisciplinary
care to patients both before and after transplantation.
