Our comprehensive program evaluates people with severe end-stage pulmonary disease who have no alternative treatment and have a life expectancy of 24 to 36 months. A team of
physicians, nurses, physical therapists, social workers, and pharmacists specializing in lung transplantation tailor a comprehensive care plan for each patient.
Our physicians collaborate with the Center for Translational Research at UI to investigate novel therapies to improve patient care. Our basic science researchers work to answer
fundamental questions about diseases such as cystic fibrosis, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease which result in the need for
transplantation.
The Lung Transplant Program was launched in 1988, when UI surgeons performed their first double-lung transplantation procedure. The University of Iowa is the only Lung
Transplant Program in the state of Iowa.
