A National Epidemic
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention rank obesity as the number one health threat in the United States today. Scientific studies show that obesity
contributes to physical, psychosocial, and economic problems. Today, approximately 65 percent of U.S. adults are overweight or obese.
The goal of weight loss is good health, and even a modest weight loss can have significant health benefits. That’s how the UI Weight Management and UI
Obesity Surgery programs at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics can help. These programs incorporate a multi-disciplinary approach to patient care that
has earned international recognition for the quality of care provided.
The UI Weight Management Clinic empowers individuals to achieve weight loss for life through a
comprehensive program focused on diet, exercise, educational therapy, and behavioral therapy.
UI Obesity Surgery Program has been named an American Society for Metabolic and
Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) Center of Excellence®. In addition, it has identified by Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield as a Bariatric Surgery Center of
Excellence and meets the criteria established by the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association for participation in the national Blue Centers for Bariatric Surgery.
These designations underscore the program's excellence in patient education and outstanding clinical outcomes.
