Maintenance contracts savings
With purchase, each new PC has three-year warranty on parts and one-year on-site labor. The PC warranty extensions typically cover years two and three on-site labor.

Printers have one-year parts and labor sometimes on-site. After that period, the equipment vendor encourages you to sign additional extended warranty maintenance agreements. However, these additional agreements are typically not cost effective.

The experience of PC and printer users, both within and outside UI Hospitals and Clinics, shows that you will save maintenance expense by not using a vendor maintenance contract. We recommend that you do not renew your current contract or sign additional agreements for the upcoming fiscal year.

When you need repair service, I recommend that you call one of our internal vendors:

  • Biomedical Engineering at 356-7491; ask for PC Maintenance
  • Radiology Engineering at 356-3377 or 356-3387

Both areas can service your needs. They will charge a fee, based on their time and materials costs. Over the life of your equipment, this in-house service should provide significant cost savings. For the first year of the program, it has been suggested you budget for these repair expenses and eliminate your maintenance contracts. An estimate of what to budget would be 15 percent less than you’re current maintenance contract expense.
