Q: How do I volunteer in a new unit?
A: Annually, all volunteers are required to participate in a reorientation and update their TB test. Reorientations occur at the beginning of each semester earlier the same evening as the new volunteer orientation. If you change volunteer areas, attending reorientation will give you priority in selecting a placement and in scheduling hours most compatible with your schedule.
Q: What if I see someone I know or know of at the hospital?
A: The hospital has a very strict confidentiality policy: What you see here, what you hear here, must remain here, when you leave here. Respect the privacy and confidentiality of all patients, staff, and volunteers in all medical and personal matters.
Q: What is the College Student Leader Board (SLB)?
A: The SLB consists of approximately 18 student volunteer leaders who have a strong commitment to service and the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. These members are responsible for coordinating the 500+ college student volunteers contributing throughout the hospital. The SLB member serves as a liaison between Volunteer Services and the supervisory staff in their assigned area. They are a facilitator and manager for the college volunteers serving to make the volunteer experience both more enjoyable and worthwhile.
Q: What does the SLB do?
A: SLB members attend monthly board meetings, build relationships with their staff supervisors, schedule and coordinate orientations for their volunteers and mentors, and administer in general the volunteer schedule for their unit.
Q: How do I become an SLB member?
A: Applications for the SLB are accepted each spring and are available from current SLB members and Volunteer Services.
