Volunteers make a difference in the quality of the experience our patients and families have at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. After working in the Volunteer Office for a period of time, you can choose from more than 125 different volunteer positions to assist in three key functions:
Direct Patient Care
As a team member with a designated nurse on an inpatient unit, you can help by feeding patients, walking with them, or transporting them to other areas of the hospital for a procedure. Volunteering on inpatient units will give you broad opportunities to work alongside staff in caring for our patients.
Indirect Patient Care
Many patients in the hospital are in need of a friend who will simply spend time with them. Opportunities exist throughout the hospital. You can escort a patient to a Project Art performance, help them write a letter, or play a game to help pass the time. You can also help out an inpatient unit by running errands.
Non-Patient Care
Many volunteers prefer a non-patient care related opportunity, by continuing to work out of the volunteer office running errands, delivering flowers or newspapers, or working on office projects. Many clinics throughout the hospital need office help as well.
