Volunteers honored at 1000+ Hour Luncheon Wednesday, June 25 Donna Besgrove and Jean Spector were welcomed into the 1000+ Hour Club at our last luncheon in the East Room, Wednesday, June 25, 2003. Donna began volunteering in October of 1994 and has spent all her hours as a Gift Shop volunteer, contributing each Wednesday afternoon. Jean Spector came to us to volunteer in May of 1999. She is a regular Gift Shop volunteer and our Friday afternoon day chair in the Volunteer Services office. Dorothy Schottelius was honored for 5,000 hours! Dorothy retired from UIHC and began volunteering in the Department of Neurology Headache Clinic in 1997. She has contributed all 5,000+ of her hours in this role. Congratulations to all for their exceptional achievements. Our next 1000+ hour luncheon is scheduled for Thursday, November 20.
Governors Awards Sally began volunteering in 1998, only two months after retiring from 34 years of full-time employment at our hospital. Since that time Sally has contributed over 4,000 hours of volunteer service to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics you could say she retired from her full-time paid position to work a half-time volunteer position! The Volunteer Service Corps Information Desk pilot was awarded our 2003 Governors group volunteer award. For the past year, these volunteers have been working with staff to increase service levels at this important first point of contact for so many of our patients, their families and friends. Sally Mathis, Tom Meyers and Beth Erkonen served on the initial planning committee, assessing survey responses and working with staff to plan a successful partnership by identifying new roles, defining jobs and implementing orientation and training programming for this new venture. When the work of this service leadership group concluded, Tom Meyers and Beth Erkonen were joined by Carl Christensen, Janet Plumer and Jim Lang as the first tier of volunteers to serve in the pilot. These dedicated teams ensured the success of the principal phase of a program that will clearly improve the service provided at our hospital and already benefits our staff, patients and visitors alike. Congratulations to our 2003 Governors Volunteer Award recipients you embody the mission of Volunteer Services in extraordinary ways.

Watch for these special "Volunteer Blue" chairs in early November!
