Volunteers honored at 1000+ Hour Luncheon
Wednesday, June 25

Donna Besgrove and Jean Spector were welcomed into the 1000+ Hour Club at our last luncheon in the East Room, Wednesday, June 25, 2003. Donna began volunteering in October of 1994 and has spent all her hours as a Gift Shop volunteer, contributing each Wednesday afternoon. Jean Spector came to us to volunteer in May of 1999. She is a regular Gift Shop volunteer and our Friday afternoon day chair in the Volunteer Services office.

Dorothy Schottelius was honored for 5,000 hours! Dorothy retired from UIHC and began volunteering in the Department of Neurology Headache Clinic in 1997. She has contributed all 5,000+ of her hours in this role.

Congratulations to all for their exceptional achievements. Our next 1000+ hour luncheon is scheduled for Thursday, November 20.

Governor’s Awards
This fall, the State of Iowa awarded Governor’s Volunteer Awards at several receptions across the state. Sally Kruse was nominated as the outstanding individual volunteer for our 2003 Governor’s Award. She has been a strong supporter and advocate of Volunteer Services and has served on the clinic hospitality carts, as a receptionist in the Fourth Floor Salon, at the Rooftop Café where she frequently opens alone before 7 a.m., in the Volunteer Services office as our receptionist, as well as contributing time in committee service here.

Sally began volunteering in 1998, only two months after retiring from 34 years of full-time employment at our hospital. Since that time Sally has contributed over 4,000 hours of volunteer service to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics…you could say she retired from her full-time paid position to work a half-time volunteer position!

The Volunteer Service Corps Information Desk pilot was awarded our 2003 Governor’s group volunteer award. For the past year, these volunteers have been working with staff to increase service levels at this important first point of contact for so many of our patients, their families and friends.

Sally Mathis, Tom Meyers and Beth Erkonen served on the initial planning committee, assessing survey responses and working with staff to plan a successful partnership by identifying new roles, defining jobs and implementing orientation and training programming for this new venture. When the work of this service leadership group concluded, Tom Meyers and Beth Erkonen were joined by Carl Christensen, Janet Plumer and Jim Lang as the first tier of volunteers to serve in the pilot. These dedicated teams ensured the success of the principal phase of a program that will clearly improve the service provided at our hospital and already benefits our staff, patients and visitors alike.

Congratulations to our 2003 Governor’s Volunteer Award recipients…you embody the mission of Volunteer Services in extraordinary ways.

Above and Beyond the Call of Duty Award
Congratulations to volunteer Sean McEvoy, who was nominated for an ABCD award by Surgical ICU staff for his supportive work there. We are proud to have his service recognized in this special way!

MAGIC MOMENTS in the Wild Rose Gifts
The Wild Rose Gifts staff thanks all the great volunteers who have graciously served at our recent "magical" events. Thursday, August 28, we hosted the popular Black and Gold Gallery to kick off the Hawkeye football season. The spectacular Christmas premiere was Friday, Oct. 24, and the following Wednesday, Oct. 29, the Wild Rose Gifts presented "Have a Holly Jolly Holiday!" in the Main Lobby. Ho! Ho! Ho!

Please welcome Andrea Fusaro and Bernie Wagner to our staff! Andrea is a former student employee so many of you know her. She has assumed the duties of Marlene Rich who retired in July.
