Series of four classes gives instruction on grocery shopping, cholesterol and fats, sodium reduction, label reading, recipe ideas and dining out.

Group Diabetes Self-Management Education

A family-centered program to help you learn how to take care of your diabetes. Topics include diabetes, nutrition, blood glucose monitoring, goal setting, foot care, and many more. Cost: $740 per family. Classes now offered days and evenings. Insurance payment (including Medicare) may be available. For more info, or to enroll, call 319-356-4858 or 319-356-2550.

REACH Diabetes Prevention Program

This 8-week lifestyle intervention program is designed for people at risk for developing type 2 diabetes. Those who have any of the following are at risk for developing diabetes: family member with diabetes, over-weight, diabetes during a pregnancy, delivered a baby that weighed over 9 lbs., high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or polycystic ovarian syndrome, or are Native American, African American or Hispanic.

The program includes education, counseling and exercise sessions to improve glucose levels and improve health. A pre-participation evaluation session is required. For questions, or appointments, call 319-356-2663.

Responding to Life's Challenges: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction

An 8-week program to learn how to manage stress and chronic conditions.

Cost: $400. For more info, call 319-384-5089 or e-mail mindfulness@uiowa.edu.

Mindfulness meditation is the core of the program. Evidence indicates that participants often experience a reduction in physical and psychological symptoms, a greater ability to respond skillfully to challenges in their lives and a greater sense of well-being.

The Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Program is sponsored by the Department of Psychiatry and UI Behavioral Health.

Take Charge of Your Health Workshop

Thursday, Oct. 15-Nov. 19
2-4:30 p.m.
UI Family Care Center

Presented by the Department of Family Medicine, this 6-week highly interactive Chronic Disease Self-Management Program is designed for people with chronic health conditions and/or people close to someone with chronic health conditions. Topics include weekly goal setting, effective problem solving, improved communications, managing symptoms and medications, fitness, relaxation, healthy eating, and dealing with negative emotions. Cost: $40, which includes a valuable resource book, "Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions," and a relaxation CD. For information or to enroll, call 319-384-8994.
