A la Carte Room Service for Patients

UI Hospitals and Clinics patients receive all their meals and snacks through the A la Carte Room Service for Patients program. You can choose your meals and snacks from the appropriate menu ordered by your physician.

Dial “1-2-3” from your room telephone to place your order, and within 45 minutes, your meal will be delivered to your bedside.

If you need assistance, please tell your nurse and a representative from the Department of Food and Nutrition Services will help.

About the A la Carte Room Service for Patients program:

  • Patients may order food anytime from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week.
  • The cost of A la Carte is included with your room charge
  • A la Carte services are limited to patients only
  • Each patient receives a personal diet plan ordered by the doctor.
  • If you are physically unable to place a telephone order, please tell your nurse and a staff member will assist you
  • If you have any questions, call the “1-2-3” number for assistance

ATM machines are available in the following locations:

  • Main Entrance Lobby, Level 1
  • Pappajohn Pavilion, West Entrance, Level 1
  • Fountain Entrance Lobby, Level 1
  • Elevator A, Level 1
  • Elevator L, Level 1

Children’s Playcourt (Elevator H, Level 1)

The University of Iowa Children’s Hospital Playcourt is a large, accessible playcourt located outside on Level 1 between Elevators H and I. The playcourt includes age-specific play areas for toddlers, preschoolers, and older children.

Credit Union Services

Members of the University of Iowa Community Credit Union can receive a full set of services at the UICCU branch office located near the Fountain Entrance on the Main Floor. Visit the UICCU site for a description of services.

The Cradle & All kiosk specializes in mother and infant merchandise as well as sandwiches and snacks.

Fourth Floor Salon

Professional stylists provide salon services and products for men and women patients, visitors, and staff in the Fourth Floor Salon. The salon also offers the Look Good…Feel Better® national program for cancer patients. A wig bank serving adult and pediatric patients is also provided.

Information Desk

Information desk representatives assist patients and families by giving directions and answering questions. Patient escorts and wheelchair assistance are available at the Information Desks. Information desks are located in the following areas:

  • Pomerantz Family Pavilion Entrance, Level 1

Medical Museum

The Medical Museum offers exhibits on the history and progress of medicine and patient care, emphasizing the role of UI Hospitals and Clinics in these advances. Through temporary and traveling exhibits of photographs, artifacts, and “hands-on” activities, visitors can view advances in patient care from ancient times to the present. Admission is free of charge and all exhibits are open to the public.

The Patients’ Library offers a wide array of materials and services for children and adults:

  • Story Hour for Children – Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m.

Project Art

Project Art conducts a wide range of art programs and services, including the selection and management of 4,000 pieces of art in the permanent collection and 2,200 reproductions; temporary exhibits  in four locations of UI Hospitals and Clinics, representing local, regional, and nationally recognized artists; performing Arts events, featuring music, dance, and theater; the Art Cart, and art supplies for patients

Spiritual Care

Chaplains from the Spiritual Services staff are available to assist you with your spiritual needs, regardless of your religious tradition.

To receive spiritual care, please ask your nurse to request a visit from a chaplain. Or you may call the Spiritual Services office between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Chaplains are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week for emergencies. Ask your nurse to page the on-call chaplain (pager 3437).

Your own priest, minister, or rabbi is always welcome to visit you while you are here. A 24-hour meditation room is located near Elevator B on Level 1. The following religious services are provided in the hospital:

  • Protestant Worship – 10:30 a.m. Sunday, East Room (Elevator F, Level 8); televised on Channel 5
  • Catholic Mass – 3:30 p.m. Sunday, East Room (Elevator F, Level 8); televised on Channel 5
  • Islamic Prayer – 12:30 p.m. Friday, Meditation Room (Elevator B, Level 1)

Valet Parking

Valet parking is available from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays at the Main Entrance and from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays at the Pomerantz Family Pavilion entrance on Level 1. To check on current parking fees, please call the Information Desk at 6-2456 from a hospital phone or 319-356-2456.

Wild Rose Books

The University Bookstore operates in partnership with Volunteer Services and features fiction and non-fiction books, newspapers, and magazines.
