Lodging

Helen Rossi Volunteer Guest House

Call 4-9240 from a hospital phone

The Rossi Guest House includes the 14-room Adult Patient and Family Suite (Elevator C, Level 5) and the 16-room University of Iowa Children’s Hospital Family Suite (Elevator C, Level 4). Guests are charged a nominal fee for these rooms.

Ronald McDonald House

Call 6-3939 from a hospital phone

The Ronald McDonald House of Iowa City serves as a “home away from home” for families of children up to age 18 who are receiving critical medical care at UI Hospitals and Clinics. Referrals are prioritized on a waiting list according to the severity of the child’s illness and distance traveled. Guests are charged a nominal fee for a room.

Local Hotels

Many nearby hotels offer hospital rates to UI Hospitals and Clinics patients and families. Several of these local hotels also offer a hospital shuttle that provides transportation to and from the hospital. A complete list is available in many clinic reception areas and family lounges located throughout the hospitals and clinics. Telephone, Television, and Computer/Internet Services

Telephones

Telephones are provided in each room, except in critical care units. Cell phone use is restricted in some areas. Please check with your nurse before you or your visitors use a cell phone. 

Local Calls
To make a local call, dial “9” and the seven-digit number.

Long-Distance Calls

  • Long-distance calls cannot be billed back to your patient room telephone
  • If you need assistance, call the hospital operator by dialing “0” from any hospital telephone

In-House Calls
To call an office within UI Hospitals and Clinics, (or within The University of Iowa) dial the last five digits of the phone number

Time and Temperature
Dial “100” from any hospital phone to hear the current date, time, and temperature.

Television and Video

Televisions are provided in each room, except in the intensive care units. The hospital provides a family movie channel for patient entertainment (also available in Spanish). Please check the listings for channel information.

In-room Movies

Call 6-2468 from a hospital phone

Patients may check out videos from the Patients’ Library.

Computer Workstations

Patients and visitors may use wall-mounted computer workstations at no charge for e-mail and Internet use available in the following locations:

  • Colloton Commons (Elevator H, Lower Level)
  • Pappajohn South Entrance (Elevator JJ, Level 1)
  • Fountain Entrance Lobby, Level 1
  • Rooftop Café (Elevator F, Level 8)
  • Patients’ Library (Elevator F, Level 8)
  • Concierge Services (Main Entrance Lobby, Level 1)

In addition, several inpatient units and outpatient clinics provide computer workstations for patients and their families. Please check with your nurse to see if your inpatient area provides this service.

Wired Internet Access
Internet access is available in each room, except in some intensive care units. Internet access is provided through GuestNet. Laptops can be checked out from the Patients’ Library. Call the library at 6-2468 from a hospital phone for more information.

Wireless Internet Services (“Hot Spots”)
GuestNet, the UI Hospitals and Clinics wireless Internet service, is available for patient and visitor use in the following locations:

  • Main Entrance Lobby
  • Java House Coffee Bar (Main Entrance Lobby)
  • Fountain Entrance Lobby
  • The Marketplace (Fountain Entrance Lobby)
  • Fountain Dining Room (Elevator C, Level 1)

Visitor Dining

Family members and friends may bring their own food into your room and dine with you, but they are not permitted to order from the A la Carte menu.

The Department of Food and Nutrition Services provides food service in various locations 24 hours a day, seven days a week for patients, visitors, and staff:

  • Fountain Dining Room – Full service dining (Elevator C, Level 1)
  • Compass Café – Mid-day dining (Elevator C, Level 1)
  • Marketplace – Snacks and meals 24 hours a day (Fountain Entrance Lobby, Level 1)

  • Atrium Dining Room – Mid-day dining (Elevator F, Level 7)
