Activities for kids and families
Play Areas
Play areas are located on the inpatient units. They have an open-door policy, except during scheduled group times. Please supervise children when they are in the play areas and help keep them safe by putting toys away when finished.University of Iowa Children's Hospital playcourt is located outside on level 1 near Elevator H. The playcourt includes age-specific play areas for toddlers, preschoolers, and older children. Please check with your child’s nurse about taking your child off the unit to the playcourt. Developmentally appropriate group activities are offered Monday through Saturday through the Child Life Program.
Teen Lounge
The teen lounge is located on level 2 of the Colloton Pavilion near Elevator H. It is a special place reserved for kids 13 years and older. Please ask a child life specialist for the combination to the locked door.
Music Therapy
Music therapists sing, play guitar, keyboard, and other instruments. Group events are offered to toddlers and school age patients. Individualized music therapy is provided on a referral basis. Talk to your child’s nurse if you are interested in receiving music therapy services.
Saryn’s Art and Nature Cart
Glue, scissors, paper, markers, and other arts and crafts supplies are waiting for patients, siblings, parents, and guests at Saryn’s Art and Nature Cart. Feel free to take supplies to your child’s room and put your creativity to work. Carts are located in each pediatric unit.
Just for Kids
The University of Iowa Children's Hospital Web site offers a variety of games, activities, and information developed just for kids.
Fourth Floor Salon (6-1996, open weekdays 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.)
The Fourth Floor Salon is located on level 4 near Elevator BE. Here you may receive professional services for your hair, skin, and nails. Once a month, the salon and Child Life program sponsor Here’s Looking at Me, a private glamour party for pediatric patients. A child life specialist will help you make an appointment for your child.
Parent’s Continental Breakfast (Fridays, 8 to 10 a.m.)
Join fellow “hospital” parents each Friday for informal conversation and a light breakfast in the family lounge.
Pizza Nights (second Wednesday of each month, 6 to 7 p.m.)
Our Family Advisory Council and others host get-togethers with pizza and soda served in the Atrium Dining Room. Bring the whole family! Take Elevator F to level 7 and follow the signs.
University of Iowa Field House (3-9293)
University of Iowa Children's Hospital families are welcome to use the University of Iowa Field House located next to the hospital. The Field House has a walking and jogging track, fitness equipment, pool, and basketball and racquetball courts. Fitness and wellness classes are offered. Some activities are free. Others require you to pay a daily fee or purchase a punch card.
