Your Role in Caring for Your Child

University of Iowa Children's Hospital recognizes that you--mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, brother, sister, or guardian--are central to your child’s care. You are not a visitor here. You are an important member of the care team, and we value your active participation.

You know your child better than anyone. You notice the subtle cues--like whether your child wants company or the meaning behind a cry. You know your child’s likes and dislikes from snacks to activities, and that information helps us assess your child’s condition and develop a plan for care. Please feel free to share your observations with the nurse or doctor at any time.

Become familiar with your child’s condition and treatment. Learn about your child’s health issues. Speak up when you need more information. Ask questions. Write in a journal or prepare a folder to keep track of important information. Your child’s doctor, nurse, or social worker, and the Patients’ Library, can provide information or link you to additional resources and support.
