Safety and Security

Smoking is prohibited

UI Hospitals and Clinics is a smoke-free campus. Smoking is not permitted in any hospital or clinic area or on any part of the hospital campus, including the parking ramps.  This policy reflects our responsibility to create a safe and healthy environment for all.

Medications

All medications you take while in the hospital are prescribed by your doctor, dispensed by the hospital pharmacy, and administered by a nurse. If you are taking medications at home, please bring with you a full list of medication names and doses to give to your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. Also include a list of over-the-counter and herbal remedies you take.

Prescriptions given to you when you leave the hospital may be filled in the General Hospital Ambulatory Care Pharmacy (near Elevator C, Level 1) or in the Pomerantz Family Pavilion Pharmacy (near Elevator L, Level 2). If prescription coverage or affordability is an issue, our pharmacists in the outpatient pharmacies and the Medication Assistance Center will work with medical staff and social workers to ensure you go home with needed medications. You may also fill your prescriptions at your local pharmacy. If you need more information, please talk with your pharmacist or nurse.

Infection Control

UI Hospitals and Clinics is committed to strict infection control. Throughout the hospital, you will see caregivers using a waterless hand rub called Avagard™D. This product is part of an overall hand hygiene program to promote the health and safety of patients and health care providers. Avagard™D is an alcohol-based product that is used instead of soap and water to kill bacteria and other germs on the hands.

Valuable or Lost Items

Call 6-2658 from a hospital phone

Patients are asked not to bring valuable items to the hospital. If you do bring a valuable item, please tell your nurse so it can be stored in the hospital safe. You will be given a written receipt for all items that must be presented when you withdraw them. The hospital does not accept responsibility for items of value unless they are deposited in the safe. If you lose something, please notify your nurse immediately, and we will make every effort to help you find it. Unclaimed articles are turned in to the Safety and Security Office, where they are kept for 90 days.
