How to Reach Us

The easiest way to reach a physician or to obtain more information about any of the services described in this directory is to use the toll-free UI Consult number listed at the bottom of each directory page.

UI Consult - 1-800-322-8442

Launched in March 1996, UI Consult serves as a direct connection to the faculty, technology, and expertise of University of Iowa Health Care. Faculty consultation is available 24 hours a day. UI Consult representatives are trained to provide personalized service and to help you make the contact as quickly as possible. UI Consult representatives can assist you in locating a physician or, if you are unsure of which physician to contact, representatives can route your call to an appropriate physician. A representative will stay on the line to assure the appropriate connection is made and to ensure follow-through on your requests.

As a centralized resource center, UI Consult representatives can also assist with:

  • Obtaining specialty consultation
  • Arranging a referral
  • Coordinating patient admissions
  • Checking on the status of patients
  • Providing information on programs and services

More than a toll-free number (1-800-322-8442), the UI Consult service is a valuable resource and is the only number health care providers will need to reach us.

UI Health Access - 1-800-777-8442

Parents may also use this service to obtain information about their child if they are unable to be here in person.

Emergency Communications - 1-800-272-6440

The AirCare fleet consists of two Aerospatiale AS350B helicopters powered by the Turbomeca Arriel 1B turbine engine. These 590 horsepower power-plants achieve a cruising speed of 120 knots.

The AirCare Emergency Helicopter Services' numerous functions include:

  • Transporting seriously ill or injured patients from the primary receiving hospital to a hospital providing a higher level of care
  • Responding to the scene of an accident or emergency, working with the local EMS team and transporting the patient to the nearest appropriate hospital
  • Transporting critically ill cardiac and other medical patients for evaluation and treatment not available at the responding hospital while minimizing out-of-hospital time
  • Supporting Iowa's statewide perinatal transport system by rapidly transporting the neonatal team to a referring hospital to stabilize a newborn baby and/or transporting the infant to the University of Iowa Health Care Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
  • Assisting the University of Iowa Health Care transplant program by transporting the organ retrieval team, viable organs, and transplant recipients when appropriate

Airborne within minutes after a request, AirCare helicopters are equipped with advanced life support technology and can reach more than half of Iowa's population within 45 minutes. AirCare is staffed by trained flight nurses prepared to address a wide variety of life-threatening emergencies. When appropriate, a pediatric or neonatal nurse specialist may join the team. Each AirCare nurse has extensive critical care nursing experience, including specialized training in the areas of advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Advanced Trauma Management, and prehospital emergency care.
