Department of Anesthesia: Clinical Anesthesia

Over 17,800 surgical and obstetrical anesthetics are administered annually for a wide variety of procedures. It is important to emphasize that the clinical caseload at the UI Hospitals and Clinics definitely covers a broad spectrum, because we do many relatively simple procedures and are not solely dependent upon sophisticated tertiary care - type procedures. Approximately 25 percent of our patients are children and many are less than a year old. We have an active obstetrical anesthesia service wherein complete perinatal obstetrical anesthesia care is emphasized. Many sophisticated and complex procedures are also performed at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, including complex congenital cardiac procedures, adult open heart surgery, extensive and sophisticated neurosurgery, orthopaedic surgery, reconstructive surgery for burns, organ transplants, and extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy.
