Department of Anesthesia: Hyperbaric Medicine
The Department of Anesthesia, located on the fifth floor of the John Pappajohn Pavilion adjacent to the operating rooms, is a regional Hyperbaric Medicine Service. In 1995 we opened a new six-patient chamber. The Hyperbaric Medicine Service is staffed by a specially trained group of faculty physicians, respiratory therapists, biomedical personnel, and other technical support staff. They are also trained in critical care, advanced life support, and diving and decompression medicine. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is now known to be effective for a wide range of conditions. A hyperbaric medicine physician can be consulted 24 hours a day through UI Consult by calling 800-322-8442. Carbon monoxide cases, severe infections, the "Bends," and crush injuries are treated on an emergency basis.
