Department of Anesthesia: Obstetrical Anesthesia
Aspects of regional anesthesia such as epidural infusion, spinal anesthesia, combined spinal and epidural anesthesia, and central neural-axis narcotic techniques are routinely provided to our patient population. At the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics we take care of most of Eastern Iowa's (pop. 2 million) high-risk obstetrical patients, including patients with congenital heart disease, diabetes, preeclampsia, multiple gestations, and premature labor. Anesthesiologists on labor and delivery are also involved in the care of patients for in vitro fertilization. This program is one of the largest and most successful of its kind in the U.S.
