General Information
The Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery provides surgical procedures for adult and pediatric cardiac and thoracic patients. Annually, the surgeons perform more than 500 heart operations and more than 400 other types of chest operations

The Cardiothoracic Surgery division includes:
Adult Cardiac Surgery
The adult cardiac surgery division performs open heart procedures, including robotic surgery. Special procedures include:
- beating heart coronary arterial bypass grafts
- heart transplants
- endovascular thoracic grafts for patients with aneurysms
- epicardial lead placement for bi-ventricular pacing
- left ventricular assist devices (LVAD)
- Maze procedure for a-fib
- mitral and aortic valve replacement
- mitral valve repairs
- robotic mitral valve surgery
- transmyocardial revascularization (TMR)
Adult Thoracic Surgery
The adult thoracic service includes the region’s most experienced team to treat patients with esophageal diseases. Specialized procedures include:
- adult ECMO
- treatment for hyperhidrosis
- minimally invasive robotic procedures for pulmonary and esophageal disease
- minimally invasive surgery for both reflux and motor disorders
- photodynamic therapy
- special expertise in thoracic outlet syndrome
- treatment for esophageal disease, both benign and malignant
- surgical treatment for patients with lung cancer
Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery
As part of University of Iowa Children's Hospital, this division offers a full range of pediatric services for patients with heart and thoracic illnesses, including:
- anomalous coronary artery repairs
- repair of arch anomalies (including coarctation and patent ductus arteriosus)
- atrial and ventricular septal defect repairs as well as AV canal procedures
- treatment of cyanotic heart disease (including tetralogy of Fallot)
- heart assist device support, ECMO
- treatment of hypoplastic left heart syndrome and the Norwood procedure
- pediatric cardiac transplantation
- repairs of pediatric chest wall deformities (pectus excavatum and carinatum)
- treatment of pediatric hyperhidrosis
- treatment of pediatric thoracic and cardiac tumors
- Ross procedure
- single ventricle repair (including Glenn and Fontan procedures)
- transposition of great arteries repair
- coronary bypass
- heart valve replacement
- pacemakers
- repair of congenital heart defects
- mechanical assist device placement (LVAD, biVAD, etc.)
- heart transplantation

- infections of the lung and chest cavity
