Department of Emergency Medicine
General Information
The Department of Emergency Medicine operates eastern Iowa’s only Level 1 Trauma Center with pediatric commitment. This American College of Surgeons designation means that UI Hospitals and Clinics provides a team around the clock for critically injured patients, and that the facility is equipped to meet Level 1 trauma needs. The department treats over 35,000 patients annually.
Patient care includes:
- Blood transfusion
- Emergency cardiac care, including a Chest Pain Center
- Fracture reductions and splinting
- General medical evaluation, stabilization, and treatment
- Gynecological evaluation and treatment
- Laceration and wound repair
- Multi-systems trauma resuscitation
- Neurological evaluation and stabilization
- Procedural sedation
- Air flight programs including AirCare I based in Iowa City and AirCare II based in Waterloo

- Computerized tomography
- Lumbar puncture
- Magnetic resonance imaging
- Pulmonary function testing
- Radiography
- Ultrasound
- Nuclear Imaging
