Department of Neurosurgery
General information
The Department of Neurosurgery provides premier patient care and conducts cutting edge research concerning diseases and physiology of the nervous system. Neurosurgery faculty collaborate with colleagues in other UI specialties, including radiology, radiation oncology, neurology, and otolaryngology. The department’s research activities include many ongoing clinical trials.
UI Hospitals and Clinics is a world leader in introducing new endovascular devices to treat patients with cerebrovascular disease. The neurosurgery team cares for more aneurysm patients than any other center in Iowa, and is one of the highest volume centers in the United States. UI Neurosurgeons also participate in a multidisciplinary group specializing in the treatment of patients with brain tumors, including offering advanced radiation treatment with the Department of Radiation Oncology. The neurosurgery faculty also partner with neurologists to offer treatments to alleviate epilepsy and work with otolaryngologists to treat the complex, skull-base surgery cases.
