Divisions and units
Comprehensive Eye Care and Cataract Clinic
Director: A. Tim Johnson, MD, PhD
Physicians provide basic eye examinations and perform all types of cataract surgery. Comprehensive eye clinic physicians work closely with referring physicians and sub-specialists within the department.
Contact Lens Service
Director: Christine W. Sindt, OD
Contact lens evaluations and fitting are provided for both medical and cosmetic needs by optometrists, opticians, and ophthalmologists.
Cornea and External Disease Clinic
Director: Kenneth M. Goins, MD
Evaluates and treats patients with corneal and external eye diseases. Services include:
- confocal microscopy
- corneal topography
- corneal transplants
- tear flow analysis
Echography Service
Director: H. Culver Boldt, MD
Specialist use A-scan and B-scan echography to examine the eye and diagnose disorders that require ultrasound evaluation. Ultrasound is used to examine parts of the eye when not visible by light and the soft tissue structures surrounding the eye when diagnosing infections, orbital tumors, congenital abnormalities, and other diseases.
Glaucoma Clinic
Director: Wallace L.M. Alward, MD
Evaluates and treats patients with glaucoma and increased ocular pressure. The service treats patients of all ages, from newborn infants with congenital glaucoma to the elderly.
Inherited Eye Diseases Program
Director: Edwin M. Stone, MD, PhD
Physicians evaluate and diagnose patients with inherited diseases involving the eye and body.
Vision Rehabilitation Services
Director: Mark E. Wilkinson, OD
These services evaluate and provide rehabilitation to patients with poor vision through the use of special corrective lenses and high tech devices. A variety of devices used to enhance vision are available on a trial basis.
Neuro-ophthalmology Clinic
Director: Randy H. Kardon, MD, PhD
Evaluates patients with a variety of neurological disorders that affect vision and the brain.
Ocular Oncology Service

Oculoplastics and Orbital Surgery Clinic
Director: Jeffrey A. Nerad, MD
Treats patients with disfiguring injuries and diseases involving the eyes, lids, and orbit as well as those desiring cosmetic plastic surgery. Services include:

- blepharoplasty
- optic nerve decompressions
Ophthalmic Photography Program
Director: Tracy L. Aly
Specialists perform:
- fundus photography
- fluorescein and indo-cyanine green angiography
- slit-lamp photography
- confocal laser photography
Orthoptics Service
Offers a variety of evaluations and strategies for treating adults and children with misaligned eye muscles.
Outreach Services
Various community-based clinical care sites provide more convenient access for some patients.

Evaluates children and adults with ocular motility problems in addition to eye diseases in children.
Perimetry Service
Director: Wallace L.M. Alward, MD
Highly trained perimetrists perform both Goldmann and automated visual field testing. The service evaluates patients with diseases such as

- neurological and vascular diseases
- ptosis
- retinitis pigmentosa
Refractive Corneal Surgery Clinic
Director: Kenneth M. Goins, MD
Performs corneal refractive surgery using the latest techniques to reduce or eliminate the patient’s need for corrective lenses.
Vascular Diseases of the Eye Clinic
Director: Sohan S. Hayreh, MD, PhD, DSc
Evaluates patients who are losing vision because of stroke and other blinding diseases caused by poor or blocked circulation in the eye.
Vitreoretinal Diseases and Surgery Clinic
Director: Stephen R. Russell, MD
Evaluates and treats patients with a large range of diseases affecting the retina and the vitreous body, including:
- diabetic eye disease
- hereditary retinal diseases
- macular degeneration
- macular holes
- ocular tumors
- retinal detachments
- uveitis

Carver Nolecular Ophthalmology Laboratory
Director: Edwin M. Stone, MD, PhD
Performs a vast array of techniques in molecular biology, including DNA extraction, linkage analysis, single strand conformational polymorphism analysis, cloning and sequencing DNA, and polymerase chain reaction.
Clinical Pupillography Laboratory and Testing
Director: Randy H. Kardon, MD, PhD
Conducts clinical and research evaluations of pupillary movements of the iris in health and disease. Examination techniques include video fluorescein angiography, eye blink analysis, and computerized eye movement analysis.
Collaborative Ocular Melanoma Study

Electrophysiology, Dark Adaptation, and Color Vision Testing

Hansjoerg E. Kolder Electrodiagnostic Laboratory
Director: Randy H. Kardon, MD, PhD
Performs electrophysiology (ERG), electro-oculography (EOG), multifocal electroretinography (MERG), dark adaptometry, and color vision testing for clinical diagnostic and research purposes.
Eye Injury Registry of Iowa
Director: H. Culver Boldt, MD
A public health resource dedicated to recording and analyzing the nature and cause of severe eye injuries throughout Iowa.
Frederick C. Blodi Eye Pathology Laboratory
Director: Nasreen Seyed, MD
The certified ocular pathology laboratory offers the most advanced diagnostic methods and can process and interpret nearly every type of ocular tissue. Facilities are also available for ocular immunopathology and molecular pathology.
Carver Family Center for Macular Degeneration, Cell Biology and Morphology Unit

This multidisciplinary center is dedicated to improving the diagnosis and treatment of patients with macular degeneration, and to providing the most advanced patient care.
