Department of Otolaryngology

Head and Neck Oncology

The Division of Head and Neck Oncology offers internationally recognized expertise in the management of neoplastic disease of the head and neck. Tumors of the oral cavity, larynx, thyroid, sinuses, and other adjacent regions are treated in a multidisciplinary fashion involving the cooperation of many specialties. A weekly Tumor Board highlights the multidisciplinary care of patients wherein the standard of care is discussed, as well as innovative management approaches including cooperative research protocols.

The Division of Head and Neck Oncology manages voice and swallowing disorders through a similar cooperative approach involving speech pathologists, gastroenterologists, and radiologists. A weekly Voice Clinic is designed for patients who are professional voice users (see below). A monthly Dysphagia Conference is designed to address difficult diagnostic and therapeutic problems involving swallowing disorders.

Advanced reconstructive techniques are available through use of microvascular free tissue transfer, implementation of regional flap reconstruction, use of titanium osseointegrated implants, and a variety of other innovative reconstructive techniques. This reconstruction program is directed to the management of patients with head and neck neoplasms, traumatic injuries, and congenital disorders.

Treatment of benign sinonasal disorders is effected through cooperative efforts by the Otolaryngology Department and Allergy Department in the care of patients with nasal obstruction, allergic rhinitis, and chronic sinusitis, in addition to more unusual sinonasal disorders.
