Acute Care Surgery
Acute Care Surgery consists of six faculty members with a special interest in the care of the severely injured. The UI Hospitals and Clinics is designated as a Level I Trauma Center. It admits 1,600 patients with trauma - primarily severe blunt trauma and farm injuries - every year. Surgeons and anesthesiologists cooperate to provide optimum care for the severely injured or sick surgical patient in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit. A trauma registry, multidisciplinary trauma teaching conferences, and collaborative research with the University of Iowa Injury Prevention Research Center complete the resources available to this team.

Endocrine Surgery
Endocrine Surgery is involved in treatment and follow-up of patients with diseases of the thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, and endocrine pancreas. Long-term follow-up by a small group of faculty with specific interest in this area provides a particularly rich clinical teaching environment in both operating rooms and clinics. Laparoscopic adrenalectomy is available.

GI (Bariatric) Surgery
The section of GI Surgery functions as an integral member of the multidisciplinary Center for Digestive Disease, where esophageal, gastric, colorectal, pancreaticobiliary, and bariatric surgery are all special interests. Laparoscopic surgery for gastrointestinal biliary, esophageal, gastric, and colon problems is available. This section is also home to the International Bariatric Surgery Registry, a unique resource that exemplifies the principles of conscientious, long-term follow-up of surgical results.

Surgical Oncology
Surgical Oncology forms an integral part of an interdisciplinary team housed in the John and Mary Pappajohn Clinical Cancer Center. Dedicated outpatient facilities specifically designed for the treatment of patients with hematologic malignancies and solid tumors (including chemotherapy and minor surgery suites) are near physician offices and the inpatient floor, producing an environment conducive to continuity of care. The Clinical Cancer Center participates in major intergroup trials with six national collaborative groups and is a major regional referral resource. This team also offers a comprehensive Breast Clinic.
