Department of Urology
General Information
The Department of Urology provides patient evaluation and treatment in the ambulatory setting as well as surgical interventions. It manages a full-service outpatient surgical clinic five days a week that includes:
- patient evaluation rooms
- cystoscopy treatment rooms
- fluoro-urodynamic suite
- fluoro-cysto-retrograde room
- ultrasound rooms
- complete outpatient surgical area with an endoscopic surgical suite and advanced lithotripsy suite
Support services are readily available on an outpatient basis and include medical consultations with many other specialized services within UI Hospitals and Clinics.

Divisions
Brachytherapy
Director: Bernard Fallon, MD
Urologists collaborate with the radiation oncologists to evaluate and treat prostate cancer patients with brachytherapy, which uses transrectal ultrasound to precisely guide the implantation of radioactive palladium seeds into the prostate.
General Urology
Male and female patients receive comprehensive examination and medical and surgical management for general urologic diseases in this clinic.
Male Infertility
Director: Moshe Wald, MD
Male patients with infertility receive evaluation and individually tailored treatment varying between medical and operative therapy. Collaboration with gynecologic specialists allows a “couple-oriented approach.”. Operative techniques include varix ligation, microsurgical vasectomy reversal, and testicular sperm retrieval.
Reproductive Testing Laboratory
Director: Amy E. T. Sparks, PhD
Run jointly with specialists in obstetrics and gynecology, this laboratory conducts reproductive research in the areas of gamete biology, in vitro fertilization, embryo culture, and gamete/embryo cryopreservation. Appointments are scheduled through both departments.
Pediatric Urology
Director: Christopher S. Cooper, MD
The pediatric urology clinic provides evaluation and management for children with:
- hypospadias, epispadias and exstrophy, other genital deformities
- neoplasms (renal, testicular, retroperitoneal)
- neurogenic bladder, myelomeningocele
- urinary tract anomalies including duplications and obstructions
- urinary tract infections
- vesicoureteral reflux
- voiding dysfunction
Sexual Dysfunction
Director: Bernard Fallon, MD
Treatments with pharmacotherapy and vacuum devices are offered as well as vascular evaluations, which are performed by radiologists. Surgical implants also are available.
Laparoscopy and Minimally Invasive Therapy
Director: Howard N. Winfield, MD
Procedures offered include uro-laparoscopic procedures such as:
- pelvic lymph node dissection
- nephrectomy
- varix ligation
Also offered are advanced endourologic procedures such as:
- endopyelotomy
- incision and dilation of urinary tract strictures
- transurethral or percutaneous management of upper tract tumors
- percutaneous nephro-lithotripsy, ureteroscopy (flexible and rigid), extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy, and the Holmium laser are performed to manage patients harboring urinary calculi.
- robotically assisted surgery.
Urodynamics and Reconstructive Urology
Director: Karl J. Kreder, MD
Urodynamics evaluates the function of the patient’s lower urinary tract. The urodynamics center performs a full range of studies, including:
- video urodynamics
- nerve conduction studies
- electromyography
- biofeedback
Reconstructive urology consists of the surgical treatment of conditions of the lower urinary tract, including urinary incontinence, urethral stricture disease, and severe bladder dysfunction such as interstitial cystitis.
Urologic Oncology
Director: Michael A. O’Donnell, MD
The urologic oncology group employs a multidisciplinary approach to treating patients with urologic cancer. Two surgical oncologists, a medical oncologist, radiation oncologists, and a urologic pathologist custom-tailor therapy for urologic oncology patients. Advanced surgical techniques for nerve-sparing, orthotopic bladder reconstruction (male and female), and the latest combination therapy are available. The group focuses on patients with cancer of the:
- prostate
- bladder
- testicle
- kidney
