Active Seniors Are Generally Healthy Seniors


Exercise is an important part of healthy living. Physically inactive people are twice as likely to develop health problems, such as heart disease, as people who exercise regularly.

As we age - exercise becomes even more important to our health. Rick Dobyns, MD, director of inpatient services in the Department of Family Medicine at UI Hospitals and Clinics, defines seniors as people over age 65. "The 'young' old refers to people from age 65 to 85. The 'old' old refers to those above 85."

"Exercise is more important than the drugs we prescribe," Dobbins says. "We use the term "activity" since exercise implies more active aerobic activity such as running, road biking, heavy calisthenics, etc. Walking, shopping, going to social events (especially with some movement activities or dancing) are all age-appropriate activities that maintain good physical and emotional health.

"If you're thinking about starting an exercise or activity program, you should have a full evaluation (annual physical, etc.) by your doctor within the past year. If you are told you doing well then proceed with the exercise program. If there are some questions about your chronic problems (arthritis, heart, high blood pressure) you should see your doctor before participating. In some cases, having your doctor send you to a physical therapist prior to an exercise program is a great idea.

"Exercise for most seniors is safe. As I noted, there may be some pre-training and some education needed before participating. I recommend exercising 20 minutes at a time, three times a week is good," says Dobbins. "It is better yet to have a daily active lifestyle. Exercise doesn't need to be vigorous, moderate exercise is best. Senior women get the same benefit from exercise as their male counterparts.

"It is never too late to start an exercise program. It is also never to early to start -- our pediatric obesity epidemic is proof of that," Dobbins says.
