Light the Night Walk to be held Saturday, Sept. 23

University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics is a sponsor of the local Light the Night Walk, to be held Saturday evening, Sept. 23. The walk is the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's nationwide evening to build awareness and raise funds to find a cure for blood cancers.

"Anyone can take part-children, adults, and seniors are all welcome," says Tom Walljasper, from Community and Patient Relations at UI Hospitals and Clinics. "This is a casual walk with no fitness requirements. Walkers carry illuminated balloons-white for survivors and red for supporters-to celebrate and commemorate lives touched by cancer."

"Funds raised by participants support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's mission: cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease, and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families," Walljasper says.

Registration and pre-walk activities, including food, bands, a dunk tank, games, and a bounce house, start at 5:30 p.m. The walk starts at 7:30 p.m. "The walk route is two miles, starting and ending at the UI Athletics Hall of Fame at the corner of Melrose Avenue and Mormon Trek Blvd. in Iowa City," Walljasper says. "Pets are welcome as long as they are on a leash and are well-behaved. Strollers are welcome, too."

To register or join a team, or for more information, call Ann Conkin with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society at 339-0072 or go to www.lightthenight.org/ia.
