The Iowa Fire Sprinkler Contractors are hosting the 4th annual University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Burn Treatment Center Golf Invitational later in August. UI Hospitals and Clinics has the only verified burn unit in the state. Last year, the unit admitted 250 adults and 100 children for burn treatment.
Lisa Falkers-Mackey, RN, a nurse in the Burn Treatment Center at UI Hospitals and Clinics, talks about the tournament:
Tell us the details about the golf tournament.
It will be held Tuesday, August 18 at Brown Deer Golf Course in Coralville. Registration starts at 10:30a.m., with shotgun starts at noon. We have an evening dinner/banquet at 5 p.m. There's a lot of different ways you can participate that day.
Who are you asking to participate in the tournament?
Everybody! We look for everybody. We have a number of people from the Burn Unit who will be golfing. The Iowa Fire Sprinkler Contractors Association has been absolutely amazing to us and a majority of the golfers come from their members. We also have burn survivors and their families who are coming. So anybody and everybody that wants to support our unit and our patients. We would love to have you.
What is included in the day's events?
It starts off with your sack lunch. We want to make sure everybody is fed right away so you can golf really well. You get your golf carts fees, a gift from us, and then your evening dinner, as well.
How is the money raised from the golf tournament used in the Burn Treatment Center throughout the year?
We have a lot of different programs on the Burn Unit. We're the only burn unit in the state, so we see everybody—from a small finger burn to a full body burn.
What's really important is prevention because most of these burns are preventable. We do a lot of outreach programs.
- We go to the third grade classes in our Iowa City schools
- We do school re-entry for kids that get burned and go back to school
- We do our Miracle Burn Camp at Lake Okoboji for our pediatric burn survivors. I actually got to go this year and it was so amazingly fun.
How do golfers register to play in the tournament?
They can do it a number of ways:

- Just show up the day of the golf tournament at Brown Deer. We will sign you up and find somebody to golf with.
If someone could not make the golf tournament but would like to support the Burn Treatment Center, is there another way they could do that?
Absolutely—we've actually had more people than ever do that this year. We've had a number of people send in donations. That is awesome and amazing because that shows us you care about us and you know what we do is important. So any dollar amount you want to send as a donation, is appreciated. We also have an auction that evening, so you can send or contact me about an item that you would like us to auction. |
