Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Iowa will celebrate Cancer Survivor Day from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 11, at Francis X. Cretzmeyer Field, the UI track and field facility located along Highway 6 in Coralville.
Each year, a day in June is set aside to honor the millions of cancer survivors around the world who have been treated for cancer and go on to lead rewarding lives. It is also to honor the memory of those who lived well but ultimately succumbed to their cancer.
The 2005 event is scheduled in conjunction with the American Cancer Society Relay for Life program. The Relay for Life begins at 6 p.m. with a "Solidarity Lap" around the UI track. Attendees of the Cancer Survivor Day event are encouraged to stay for the Solidarity Lap and other Relay for Life events.
This year's featured speaker at the Cancer Survivor Day event is Colleen Chapleau, a cancer survivor and director of the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center Bone Marrow Transplant Program. She was one of 20 riders who biked across the country with famed cyclist Lance Armstrong on the Tour of Hope. The Tour of Hope is designed to raise awareness for the need for cancer clinical trials.
In addition to hearing Chapleau's inspiring story, attendees can dance to the UI Steel Drum band, get a massage and plant a flower to celebrate their lives. Cancer Survivor Day is for anyone who has been affected by cancer, including survivors, family members and patients receiving treatment.
The program starts at 4 p.m. Attendees can park for free in the Arena Lot across from Carver Hawkeye Arena and take a free shuttle to the event.
