University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics will show a pensive and moving display titled "Haunted," featuring photographs related to the experience of domestic violence from October 17 to 21 on the first level of the John Colloton Pavilion between Elevators E and F.
Every year in the United States, intimate partners rape or physically assault about 1.5 million women and more than 800,000 men. In support of Domestic Violence Awareness Month occurring, UI Hospitals and Clinics will exhibit an 18-piece display of the work of the artist, Holly Randall, a photography student at the School of Art Institute of Chicago.
The Domestic Violence Panel at UI Hospitals and Clinics partners with the Iowa City Domestic Violence Intervention Project to provide care and assistance to people affected by a range of abusive behaviors, including physical violence. The groups provide training to hospital workers and develop hospital policies to assure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements pertaining to domestic violence.
"The hospital's Domestic Violence Panel is constantly looking for ways to communicate to patients, visitors, and staff a concern for victims of domestic violence and is committed to informing others, including adults and children, that violence is not an acceptable way to resolve conflict," says Greg Jensen, director of UI Hospitals and Clinics Social Services. One example of that communication is the display of assistance cards in all public restrooms that are written in both English and Spanish. The cards convey a supportive message and provide information about community resources available to help those who may be involved in an abusive relationship.
