Coverage through Medicare's prescription drug program will begin Jan. 1, 2006, for those who enroll in a plan.

Beginning Nov. 15, Iowans with Medicare will be able to choose from more than 50 different Medicare-approved drug plans sponsored by various private insurers.

People with Medicare will have until May 15, 2006, to enroll in a prescription drug plan; enrollment after that date could result in higher premiums over a lifetime.

The UI sessions will provide information to help individuals and families learn more about the new Medicare prescription drug program, drug plan options, costs and available resources. More information is available at the UI Center on Aging Web site.

The UI Center on Aging fosters and supports interdisciplinary research, education and service throughout the campus and state to improve understanding of the aging process and the health and well-being of older people.
