Rao Selected To Receive International
Gastroenterology Award

Satish Rao, M.D., Ph.D., director of neurogastroenterology and gastrointestinal motility at UI Hospitals and Clinics and professor of internal medicine, University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, has been selected to receive the 2006 American Gastroenterology Association (AGA) Masters Award in Gastroenterology.

The award recognizes scientists and physicians who have made significant and sustained contributions to gastrointestinal research and who have been academic leaders.

Rao's research focuses on neurogastroenterology and motility. He is widely recognized for contributions in colorectal area research, particularly constipation, irritable bowel syndrome and fecal incontinence. Rao's other research areas include non-cardiac chest pain, diabetic gastroparesis and fructose intolerance. These problems affect 25 percent of the population in the United States. The award recognizes Rao's pioneering research as well as his active role as a teacher and educator in promoting neurogastroenterology and providing outstanding care to patients with motility disorders.

"My goal has been to disseminate scientific information, to educate fellows, and to educate gastroenterologists and others involved in this field so that some of the tools we are discovering in the laboratory both in understanding and diagnosing problems can be used widely to help patients everywhere," Rao said.

Recipients for the award are selected by an independent and distinguished panel of international leaders in gastroenterology appointed by the AGA. Rao will accept the award in May at the annual AGA meeting in Los Angeles.
