Brain Discovery Fair and Lecture
Scheduled for UI Brain Awareness Week

Students and faculty in the UI Neuroscience Graduate Program will host two events in April to celebrate Brain Awareness Week, an annual public information campaign designed to focus public attention on the importance of brain research.

Brain Awareness Week is a nationwide campaign established by the Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives.

In support of Brain Awareness Week, UI events will include:

  • A Brain Discovery Fair 2006 on Saturday, April 8. It will feature interactive exhibits illustrating the workings and importance of the brain. The fair is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the UI Theatre Building.
  • Steven Small, M.D., Ph.D., professor of neurology and psychology and co-director of the Brain Research Imaging Center at the University of Chicago, will deliver a public lecture titled, "Language and Motor Systems of the Human Brain: Interactions and Neurological Implications" in room 2117 of the Medical Education and Biomedical Research Facility (MERF) at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 11.

Small is an expert on the neurobiology of motor and language systems and their recovery after stroke. He received a doctoral degree in computer science from the University of Maryland in 1980 and a medical degree from the University of Rochester in 1987. Small conducted postdoctoral training in neurology at the University of Pittsburgh in 1991. He is a member of the American Neurological Association and sits on the governing boards of the Pittsburgh Chapter for the Society for Neuroscience, Academy of Aphasia, and Brain Network Recovery Group.

  • A poster session highlighting current UI neuroscience research will precede the lecture and will provide attendees an opportunity to discuss the latest research developments with UI neuroscientists. The posters will be on display from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the MERF atrium.

UI Brain Discovery 2006 events are sponsored by the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, and by the Departments of Anatomy and Cell Biology, Pathology, Pharmacology and the Department of Biological Sciences in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
