The U.S. National Commission on Libraries and Information (NCLIS) recently announced the state winners for the 2006 NCLIS Health Information Awards for Libraries, which included the Patients' Library at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. The program will now be entered in the NCLIS national competition.
The Patients' Library partnered with the Cancer Information Service in the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center to offer educational opportunities to help people learn more about searching for information about cancer.
The effort focused on:
- Searching for cancer information on the Internet
- How to find clinical trials
- National Library of Medicine programs that provide cancer information
Individual participants received assistance in searching for specific cancer information.
Mindy Egeland, Patients' Library director, and Joan Felkner, Cancer Information Service director at Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, led the project.
The National Library of Medicine of the National Institutes of Health funded this project in part with federal funds. Volunteer Services at UI Hospitals and Clinics also contributed funding to the Radiation Oncology Media Center. Plans are underway to also offer the service at the Iowa City Public Library.
Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center is Iowa's only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated comprehensive cancer center. NCI-designated comprehensive cancer centers are recognized as the leaders in developing new approaches to cancer prevention and cancer care, conducting leading edge research, and educating the public about cancer.
