Community Program May 9 to
Focus on Cancer Causes, Myths


Is cancer more common today than in the past? Is cancer inherited or is there something you can do about it? What can you do today to reduce your chance of getting cancer tomorrow?

A discussion of cancer, the myths surrounding the disease and what people can do to reduce their risk for cancer will be the subjects of the next "Health For Your Lifetime" program, sponsored by University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 9, at the Holiday Inn Conference Center at 1220 First Avenue, Coralville.

George Weiner, M.D., director of the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Iowa and the C.E. Block Professor of Cancer Research, will lead the presentation and discussion.

Weiner will address such questions as:

  • Is cancer more common today than in the past?
  • Is cancer inherited or is there something you can do about it?
  • What can you do today to reduce your chance of getting cancer tomorrow?

Learn about some of the many myths and truths about cancer, including discussion of what cancer is, what causes it, what doesn't cause it, cancer prevention strategies, and advances being made in the fight against cancer. Come hear about some of the many myths and truths about cancer, including discussion of:

  • What is cancer?
  • What causes it and what doesn't cause it?
  • Cancer prevention strategies
  • Advances being made in the fight against cancer

There will also be time for questions and answers.
