Fairley Named Head of

Janet Fairley, MD, has been named head of the Department of Dermatology in the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine and University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. The appointment will be effective January 1, 2007. Fairley also will have an appointment as a staff physician with the Veterans Affairs (VA) Iowa City Health Care System. Fairley is a professor of dermatology at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) in Milwaukee, where she also is director of the residency program in dermatology. In addition, Fairley is co-director of the Immunodermatology Laboratories at MCW and section chief of dermatology for the Zablocki VA Medical Center in Milwaukee. "Dr. Fairley is a stand-out in her field and brings an excellent combination of leadership, scholarship, patient care and dedication to education," said Jean Robillard, MD, dean of the UI Carver College of Medicine. "We're delighted that she has accepted the position." Craig Syrop, MD, UI professor of obstetrics and gynecology, has been serving as interim head of the department. Syrop will return to fulltime duties in obstetrics and gynecology. "Dr. Syrop has been serving the department admirably, and we appreciate that his dedication will help create a smooth leadership transition," Robillard said. Fairley's patient care emphases include psoriasis, clinical immunology, malignant and benign tumors, and autoimmune and allergic diseases. She is the author of nearly 85 research papers. Fairley earned a medical degree in 1977 from the University of Michigan Medical School, where she also completed a residency in dermatology and a fellowship in cellular and molecular dermatology. |
