First Burn Treatment Center
Golf Tournament Nets $18,000

The first Burn Treatment Center Golf Tournament, sponsored by the Iowa Fire Sprinkler Contractors Association on August 22, 2006, at the Brown Deer Golf Course in Coralville, Iowa netted $18,060 for the Burn Treatment Center at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Lisa Falkers, RN, a nurse in the Burn Treatment Center and the event's coordinator, called the results "amazing," saying that the total was three times the targeted goal. "I am still in shock mode. All of our efforts really paid off," Falkers said.

More than 70 golfers participated in the tournament, which started at 9:30 a.m. and ran until 6 p.m. Many sponsors and guests also attended the tournament and the auction which followed the golf rounds. The auction portion of the event included Hawkeye football memorabilia, including a helmet signed by UI Head Coach Kirk Ferentz and a jersey signed by Dallas Clark, a former Hawkeye player who now plays for the Indianapolis Colts. Other items donated for auction included picnic baskets, Hawkeye lawn chairs, and gift certificates to local and national businesses. Framed pictures painted by pediatric campers at the Miracle Burn Camp 2006 at Lake Okoboji were given to sponsors donating at least $1,000 to the event.

Two burn survivors treated in the Burn Treatment Center, Wesley Bostwick and Beverly Gartner, shared their stories of courageous recovery. Their presentations were both followed by standing ovations.

Money raised by the tournament will go to fund nursing education, outreach prevention programs, school/work re-entry programs for burn survivors, Miracle Burn Camp, safety fairs and other Burn Treatment Center activities.

The Burn Treatment Center is the state's only verified burn center. Specialists provide comprehensive care to adult and pediatric patients throughout their recoveries, including following their discharge from the hospital.

The Burn Treatment Center and University of Iowa Children's Hospital within UI Hospitals and Clinics provide an important opportunity for ongoing healing of burned children. The Miracle Burn Camp helps children between the ages of seven and 17 to learn in a positive environment how to live with their burn injuries.

The Burn Treatment Center and University of Iowa Children's Hospital also offer a key fire safety program for children. The Kids on the Block puppeteer program reaches students in their classrooms and helps them learn how to prevent burn injuries. Specialists also provide re-entry programs to help ease the transition back to school or work for burn patients.
