Community Program September 20

Childhood obesity, and what parents and children can do about it, will be the focus of a special community program from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, September 20, at Coral Ridge Mall, Coralville. This program is free and open to the public. Registration is limited. For more information or to register, call UI Health Access at 319-384-8442 or 800-777-8442. Presented by University of Iowa Children's Hospital at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, this two-part program will feature a seminar for parents and educational activities for kids. The seminar for parents will be held in the Community Room at Coral Ridge Mall. Patricia Donohoue, MD, and Michael Tansey, MD, both of University of Iowa Children's Hospital, will present, "Childhood Obesity: What Can You Do?" This presentation will include discussion of:

There is an epidemic of childhood obesity in the United States and throughout the world. These children face a higher risk much earlier in life of developing obesity-related disorders such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, stroke and some cancers. Studies have shown that overweight adolescents have a 70 percent chance of becoming overweight or obese adults—all the more reason why parents should encourage kids to develop healthy eating habits and remain physically active throughout childhood. Part of the "Health For Your Lifetime" series presented by UI Hospitals and Clinics, this special program is supported in part by Kohl's and is presented in partnership with Coral Ridge Mall and the Iowa Children's Museum. |
